Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge (OCIJ), Executive Office for Immigration Review, U. S. Department of Justice. Incumbent provides a range of legal support functions to include review and processing of documents, maintenance of case files and coordination of proceedings for master calendar hearings.

This is a Competitive Service position; additional positions may be filled from this announcement within 90 days of certificate issuance.

Duties

Help

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Organizing case files for Master Calendar Hearings.
  • Generating, assembling, and providing required case files to the Immigration Judge.
  • Providing assistance in processing inquiries, legal notices, and calendaring processes and procedures.
  • Processing legal correspondence and legal documents.
  • Processing motions, petitions, and other legal documentation.
  • Preparing reports and maintain/edit case-related data and information using an automated information system.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for the Legal Administrative Specialist (In-Court Services)position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

FOR THE GS-9 LEVEL:
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have at least one or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties:
  1. Assisting with processing court related actions during court proceedings by generating, pulling, organizing, assembling, and providing required case files;
  2. Processing legal correspondence and legal documents; and
  3. Providing assistance in processing inquiries, legal notices, calendaring processes and procedures.

Education:
Applicants must have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or LL.B. or J.D., that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: Applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts for verification.

Combination:
Applicants must have a combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience as described above that totals 100 percent when combined. To compute, first determine total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine total graduate education as a percentage of the graduate education required for the grade level; and then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Only graduate education in excess of one year, i.e., 18 semester hours, may be combined with experience under this provision.) NOTE: Applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts for verification.

FOR THE GS-11 Level:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one or more full-time years (12 months) of specialized work experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties:
  1. Processing court related actions during court proceedings by generating, pulling, organizing, assembling, cross-referencing and providing required case files;
  2. Analyzing and evaluating administrative legal cases for hearings;
  3. Providing assistance in processing inquiries, legal notices, calendaring processes and procedures; and
  4. Processing motions, petitions, and other legal documentation.

Applicants must have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: Applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts for verification.

Combination:
Applicants must have a combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience as described above that totals 100 percent when combined. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one or more full-time years (12 months) of specialized work experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties:
  1. Analyzing documents to ensure all correspondence and notices are included in administrative legal case files for hearings;
  2. Serving as a courtroom coordinator;
  3. Processing motions, petitions, and other legal documentation;
  4. preparing and sending legal correspondence and legal documents to the appropriate party; and
  5. Coordinating processing court related actions during court proceedings by generating, pulling, organizing, assembling, cross-referencing and providing required case files.

Alternative work schedules options may be available. Tour of duty may include Saturdays and Sundays.
Conditions of Employment: Only U.S. Citizens or Nationals are eligible for employment with the Executive Office for Immigration Review.
